Did you know that the first dildo was made of stone, tar, wood, bone, ivory, limestone, teeth or any other materials that could be shaped as phallus and was firm enough to be used as a penetrative sex toy?

Scientists believe that a 20-centimetre siltstone phallus from the Upper Palaeolithic period about 30,000 years ago, found in Hohle Fels Cave near Ulm in Germany, could be used as a dildo.

For example, in ancient Greece, dildos were often made from leather stuffed with wool to give it varying degrees of thickness and firmness.

They were often lubricated with olive oil and used for sexual activities. Ancient Greeks were also one of the first groups to use the term “toy” about a dildo.

Dildos also may be seen in ancient Greek vase art. Some of them show their use in group sex or solitary female masturbation.

A classicist and feminist theorist, Page DuBois, suggests that dildos were present in Greek art because the imagination of the ancient Greek male found it difficult to imagine sex taking place without penetration.
